The college was established by the Ranchi Jesuit Province of the Society of Jesus on July 3, 1944. It is registered under the local title ‘Xaviers Ranchi’ under the society’s Registration Act XXI of 1860. Moreover, the Ranchi Jesuit Province of the Society of Jesus started the college after identifying the need for a higher education institute in the region.St. Xavier’s Ranchi was initially affiliated with Patna university, and, from 1950-1960, the college was under Bihar University. However, the college is now affiliated with Ranchi University. St. Xavier’s College is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited the college with an ‘A’ grade. The UGC conferred the college with autonomous status in 2005 and granted ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ status in 2006. St. Xavier’s College Ranchi courses include 30+ courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the fields of arts, science, commerce, business administration, vocational, and education. As a Jesuit higher educational institution, St Xavier's Ranchi is dedicated to the Christian minority and socially and financially marginalised, including SC/ST/OBC. It also offers financial assistance to its students via various scholarship programmes. The St. Xavier’s College Ranchi campus is spread over 29.8 acres and provides campus facilities such as a library, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, hostel accommodation, and laboratories, among others.
